What is PTSD?

PTSD is essentially a psychological/emotional injury where an event far superseded a person’s ability to cope, posed significant threat, and trauma became lodged in the body and nervous system. PTSD can bring depression, irritability, loss of relationships, risk of substance use, and even complete numbness or detachment. PTSD has three main symptoms listed below:

Do you have PTSD?

1. Re-experiencing the trauma. This can be in the form of intrusive thoughts and memories, flashbacks and nightmares often accompanied by severe anxiety, and or panic, such as racing heart rate, palpitations, sweating, dizziness, etc.

2. Over-arousal. This comes in the form of always being on the lookout, hyper vigilance, feeling that danger can come at any moment, even when there is no apparent danger. You live keyed up and tense. You may feel distrustful of people, even when things are safe.

3. Avoidance. Avoiding all people, places, things, and even thoughts and feelings, associated with the trauma.

Amy trained in Cognitive Restructuring for PTSD while at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care program in under Stephanie Marcello, Ph. D. in 2018, and in Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) in 2022 under Edna B. Foa, Ph.D and Sandra Capaldi, Ph.D.

These therapies are highly researched and effective treatments for PTSD. Amy has successfully treated patients with PTSD stemming from abuse, assault, sexual trauma, and unexpected violent loss.

What’s involved in treatment for PTSD?

Treatment for PTSD using Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) is a manualized treatment lasting approximately 4 months when attending weekly. ERP will generally provide relief to the most distressing parts of the PTSD symptoms when clients are complaint with the homework and exposures. Some people stay longer after relief from the most acute PTSD symptoms in order to process associated grief and loss, or to process additional sources of trauma.

You will receive psycho-education regarding symptoms and effects of trauma, and be able to identify exactly where PTSD symptoms show up in your life. This alone often brings significant relief. Understanding why you respond to benign situations as you do is sometimes enough to reduce PTSD symptoms. People often report that they no longer feel “crazy,” or like they will die or panic.

You will learn exactly what to expect in treatment, the rationale for the treatment, and be guided step by step.

You will learn how to retrain your nervous system so that benign events no longer trigger your fight or flight response, nor your shut down response. Watch this video to learn how trauma impacts the nervous system!

Do not wait. You have already been through enough, and there is a way out. Call or text, or email today to start your way to relief from PTSD. You, only stronger.
